Six 17 Syllable Portraits

by Adriana Sánchez Alexander

I.

Skips bird-like

next to her husband,

matching outfits at the Alamo.

II.

Este Elvis adjusts his collar  –

thin hair yet rallies to pompadour –

orders migas.

III.

Large round woman,

red flowered dress,

dances to norteño dreams of home.

IV.

Bunkhouse man walks;

right foot lifts as though pulled by string,

knotted at the sole.

V.

Bus stop –

seventeen year old girl waits,

a man's name tattooed on her neck.

VI.

Boss parks his pickup,

blows smoke out the window

while brown men dig close by.
