BUTTERFLY FLEES

by Jackie De Hon, Ph.D.

Although this process world

We live in is forever changing,

We try to force rigidity

Through “loving” and through naming.

We shout “Betrayal!” with each change

As fear strikes in our hearts.

We label others “Deviant!”

Ignoring our own warts.

Changing?  Thinking for yourself?

What right have you to choose!

I’d rather you-would-live-a-lie

Than I reveal my ruse.

For then I’d lose control of you.

Perhaps your love would die.

I’ll risk whatever harm it does

To hold you close, and I

Will lie to you until you’re blind

To all the “truth” but mine.

I’ll fill your heart with many fears,

Plant insecurities.

I’ll try to kill your self-esteem,

Your curiosity.

I’ll make accepting-my-worldview

An acid test of love.

Then maybe…you won’t DARE to be

Yourself—that unique soul—

And I’ll continue to control

Your life—I’ll reach my goal.

Unless…a tiny spark of life

Survives to set you free

And you arise—a butterfly—

And fly away from me.
